The console market has been on the decline in Japan for several years now and 2014's sales figures only paint a bleaker picture.
According to sales data reported by Famitsu, consumers in the region spent less on console hardware last year than any other year in the past 24 years. That's not particularly promising. Total spending for 2014 weighed in at 369 billion yen, with 142.15 billion yen being attributed to hardware and 226.4 billion yen amassed in software sales.

Consumers in Japan are apparently more interested in PC gaming and smaller experiences on mobile devices. Sadly, this has come at the cost of the dedicated handheld and console markets. Will things turn around in the region? Only time will tell.
