It's been a tumultuous few weeks at Konami with the recent Hideo Kojima and P.T. drama. The company continues to move away from traditional games, and it looks like the move will be permanent according to a Nikkei report.
The translation from both Google and NeoGAF reveals that Konami plans to pursue mobile as its lead platform going forward. Konami CEO Hideki Hayakawa also highlighted the pay-as-you-play model as a central focus.
"Our main platform will be mobiles," he said. "Following the pay-as-you-play model of games like Power Pro and Winning Eleven with additional content, our games must move from selling things like 'items' to selling things like 'features.'"
Hayakawa also described the mobile platform as the place "where the future of gaming lies." Thus, the company doesn't rule out the possibility of putting its franchises on mobile devices.
"We hope that our overseas games such as MGSV and Winning Eleven continue to do well, but we are always thinking about how to push our franchises onto mobile there too," Hayakawa stated.
Given the recent news surrounding Konami, it's not surprising to see the company go all in on mobile development. In fact, many Japanese companies are making the exact same transition. The idea of Metal Gear Solid games on mobile devices causes me to shudder though.
