10 Things You Might Not Know About MGS5: The Phantom Pain
A story told through cassette tapes
Storytelling in The Phantom Pain is much different than prior Metal Gear games. Much of it is told through audio logs earned through collectible cassette tapes, which can be listened to while you play. These are optional, which is a radical change from prior games in the series.
No respite from the blazing desert
The Phantom Pain has two large regions to explore: Afghanistan and Africa. There are no other areas represented, meaning that you'll be spending the majority of your time in the hot desert. Though, there will be a day/night cycle to ensure that there's some variety.
Gameplay prioritized
Those familiar with Metal Gear have become accustomed to long cutscenes that sometimes overstay their welcome. This is far less common in The Phantom Pain. In-fact, there is a shorter cutscene length than Metal Gear Solid 4 despite The Phantom Pain being a longer game. You will spend the majority of your time playing the game, uninterrupted by lengthy cutscenes, making this the most newbie friendly Metal Gear yet.
Hayter seriously isn\'t in the game
It is now official that the original English voice actor for Solid Snake and Big Boss is not present in The Phantom Pain. This comes as a surprise to the many who speculated that he would make an appearance in some form.
Kiefer Sutherland makes a great Big Boss
Many Metal Gear fans have been apprehensive about Kiefer Sutherland taking over as role of Big Boss. But really, it was for the better. His verbal and physical talent has resulted in a remarkable performance that is sure to impress even the biggest David Hayter fans.
The longest Metal Gear ever
Metal Gear games tend to weigh in at around 20 hours in length, and around double that if you want to collect everything. The Phantom Pain smashes the trend with a main story around 30 hours in length, and so much side content that it'll take you at least 90 hours to complete it all.
Mother Base progress is a requirement
There are points in the story that, like Peace Walker, will require Mother Base progress in order to move forward. You will want to spend time regularly heading back to Mother Base to make sure that you're keeping up with your upgrades and new item acquisitions, or you'll find yourself hitting hurdles in the main story missions.
Microstransactions have hit multiplayer the hardest
While you will be able to play the multiplayer component of The Phantom Pain without shelling out any cash, those who spend money will have an advantage through accelerated progress. This comes in the form of Mother Base Coins, or MB Coins, which are used for progression purposes. They can be earned in single-player, but are easily acquired through real-money microtransactions.
A polished 60 FPS
The Phantom Pain is without a doubt a beautiful game. What's most impressive about its presentation is that, despite being an open-world action game, it remains at 60 frames per second without compromise. It's a technical marvel.
There\'s a true ending.
Metal Gear fans will want to play on Hard and earn all the collectibles, as they will be required to view the "true" ending. This finale ties major plot elements together in a fashion that is sure to leave fans with goosebumps. rn rnRead more here .
