The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Elevates CD Projekt RED to Stardom With 6 Million Units Sold

At the start of 2015 many gamers were itching for a deep and compelling RPG to play. Arriving in May, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the perfect solution to a common gamer problem. It wasn't just regarded as good, it was outstanding, earning the lion's share of attention from gaming discussion for months to follow.

The Witcher 3's widespread popularity would result in a massive number of sales, totaling at over six million units within six weeks, as confirmed by developer CD Projekt RED. This makes it the best-selling title so far in 2015, and the fourth best-selling western RPG in history with months of strong sales yet to come.

Developer CD Projekt RED has been humbled by the reception. Beginning in 2002 as a medium sized company based in Poland, it would experience enough success with its first two The Witcher releases to finance future works. The Witcher 3 is without a doubt its crowning achievement with a 94 Metacritic average, making it a strong game of the year 2015 contender.

CD Projekt RED isn't expected to work on another The Witcher game anytime soon. Instead, it's focusing its efforts on the upcoming dystopian RPG called Cyberpunk 2077. Expectations are high as it tries to build a new IP.
