It's hard to believe but Halo 5: Guardians is now less than two months away from release. As a massive fan of the franchise ever since Combat Evolved, I've gone through an emotional journey (well, that may be overstating it a bit) ever since Bungie departed the franchises and 343 Industries took the reigns.
While I unquestionably love Halo 4, it lacked the same staying power and impact of the original trilogy, and with last year's debacle that was The Master Chief Collection, there's been a justified cause for concern about the future of the franchise.
Fortunately, it looks like 343i has found its footing. Halo is taking the franchise in some interesting new directions, and I can't wait to see how it all turns out. Just check out the opening cinematic, which Microsoft just recently revealed, below.
Did you notice something? Spartan 117 is notoriously absent from the video. As I'm sure you're all aware by now, the campaign will tell two sides of the same story: one from the perspective of Master Chief and Blue Team, and the other from Spartan Locke and Team Osiris.
Based on the opening cutscene, it looks like the game will be kicking things off through the perspective of Locke, as he and his merry band of Spartan IVs track down and capture Dr. Halsey, the woman who spearheaded the Spartan program many, many years ago.
While yes, it's a bit of a bummer we probably won't be playing as Chief right out of the gate, the fact that 343i plans to delve even deeper into the series' lore with Guardians has this fanboy salivating in delight. Plus, the visual fidelity and sheer beauty of that opening is absolutely glorious! It's clear Microsoft is sparing no expense in funding this game.
But enough of what I think. What do you make of the game's opening cinematic? Does it have you all the more hyped for October 27?
