PSA: Here’s How To Prevent MGSV: The Phantom Pain Save File Corruption According To Konami

Given how large of a game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is, it's staggering that it's as polished of an experience as it is. Complaints about bugs and glitches are seldom talked about in MGSV discussions, a rare outcome for a AAA game released on five platforms. Well, except for one major issue.

Many users have reported over the weekend that their MGSV save file has become corrupted more than 25 hours into the game experience. The issue seems to have appeared out of nowhere, and is irrecoverable for those who haven't made a copy of their save.

For days the issue was treated as a rare, one off problem that an unfortunate few have had to deal with. Today, Konami has issued an official warning regarding the corrupted save issue. It includes acknowledgement of the issue as well as its root cause. It states:

In "METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN" which was released on September 1st 2015, there is a possibility that save data may get corrupted and becomes unusable if having Quiet as a buddy while playing "Mission 29" or "Mission 42". This situation can be avoided by not using Quiet as a buddy while playing either "Mission 29" or "Mission 42".

Note that deploying Quiet as a buddy for Mission 29 or Mission 42 doesn't guarantee that your save file will become corrupted. However, for the sake of preventing a massive loss of progress it is advised that you use a different buddy during these two missions.
