Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Will Soon Support Mods and Map Creation Tools

If you're debating which versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 to get, you'll want to hear this.

For the first time in Call of Duty history, Black Ops 3 will support both modding and map creation tools. These will allow players to not only create but share their own content, building upon the game's large library of maps and game modes. The catch? It'll only be available on PC.

The details are as follows:

  • You will be able to create Maps & Game Modes and more!
  • We will include Unranked Dedicated Server Files with the tools so you can run servers with modded content anywhere you choose.
  • We will provide an Unranked Server Browser so you can easily find and join servers with modded content.

The estimated debut is March 2016, which means that it won't be supported during the height of the game's popularity. While that's unfortunate, the significance of these additions make it a game changer. Mods and map tools in first-person shooters have a long history of adding tremendous value to games such as Unreal Tournament and Halo.

Historically, user-creation tools have been reserved to PC games, and seen as a huge perk to gaming on the platform. However, Fallout 4 will soon support approved mods on Xbox One, which shows that it's possible for them to be introduced to the console environment. Maybe one day these tools will make their way to Call of Duty console versions.
