Best of 2015 Awards: Biggest News

Winner: Satoru Iwata Passes Away & Final Fantasy VII Remake Announced (TIE)

I remember the moment clearly. I was sitting near the front of the stage at Sony’s E3 press conference when a heard the distant tsunami, the rolling thunder of excitement and disbelief, before it crashed into me in roars, cheers, squeals, and sizable tears. The remake for Final Fantasy VII was real, and almost swept away Uncharted 4 and The Last Guardian beneath its weight. Yes, Sony doesn’t like to lose.

But choosing this moment as the biggest gaming news of the year just doesn’t sit right when Satoru Iwata, one of the most prominent figures in Nintendo and gaming in general, was taken from us far too soon. The entire gaming world stopped when news of his passing broke, and his absence is still felt today as we remember one of the shining figures that brought fun, life, and joy to households around the world, raising a new generation of gamers with the joyous spark of video games. Rest in piece, Iwata-san. You are dearly missed.
