For anyone who thought the coy musings of Mortal Kombat creator and NetherRealm Studios head Ed Boon would cease after the successful launch of Mortal Kombat X and its subsequent character packs, you thought wrong.
With the impending 2017 debut of Injustice 2, the sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us, Mr. Boon is indeed up to his old tricks, highlighted by the latest carrot on a string – Image Comics' Spawn.
Now, I know everyone reading clicked on this article to find out if Spawn will indeed make an appearance in Injustice 2, but Boon only breaks his cheeky character to quash outright falsehoods or let someone down easy. Although, while he'd never give something away in such an unceremonious manner, Spawn seems to be the noun, verb AND adjective in most of his Tweets as of late.
It all started with a Twitter survey he posted, in which 28,000+ participated, that showed the most preferred Non-Mortal-Kombat-Related guest character for Injustice 2 would be Spawn. (For the record, my pick was Buffy). Since then, Spawn has showed up quite a bit on Mr. Boon's Twitter account.
How likely is Spawn to actually appear? While the character isn't DC Comics, he also isn't Marvel, which makes his inclusion a lot more likely. NetherRealm Studios has also shown a penchant for securing guest spots from characters all throughout pop culture, regardless of comic or studio affiliation.
Mortal Kombat X secured both Jason Voorhees and Leatherface despite those characters being owned by different studios, and they threw in both Alien & Predator to top it off.
And, if Ed Boon keeps talking about it, what else are we supposed to think?
