3G Vitas Already Getting Price Cuts in Japan

Even though Sony may not be ready to officially cut the price, a few retailers in Japan definitely are. Since the 3DS discovered a steep surge in purchases after their price drop, it seems that some retailers believe they can tap into a similar sale surge by dropping the price of the 3G model of the Vita by 20%.

It's not that great of a surprise that most people are opting for the Wi-Fi-only version over the 3G, especially since the 3G requires a monthly plan and you can't use it to play games with friends or download anything of significant size. However, retailers were floored with how few of these models were leaving the shelves.

In fact, the incredibly low sales of the 3G model may be the major reason behind the low sales of the Vita overall. Afterall, Vita sales in its first week of existence were drastically lower (72,749) than the Nintendo 3DS' launch week (321,000).

We can speculate that if units come off the shelves after this price drop that Sony will formally adopt it, but as with everything else, only time will tell. Let's all hope that it does, because this price drop will not be coming over here since it's a retailer cut and not an official one.
