It seemed that Nintendo forgot about their augmented reality feature for the 3DS, as we have heard hide or hair of nothing since the handheld's launch last spring. That changed today when Nintendo announced that they will release a new AR game on April 13, 2012, entitled Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir.
Spirit Camera looks like many iOS games that use the iPhone's camera for augmented reality games, such as catching flies or taking pictures of ghosts. Players use both a 16-page AR book and the 3DS camera to see a girl named Maya in their own surroundings so they can try to break a curse placed upon her.
Players can also use the camera to take pictures of their own surroundings to use in the game itself. Nintendo further emphasized that players "will be dogged by malevolent spirits around every corner."
Spirit Camera has already launched in Japan, where it will most likely fair better than it will here. These games don't do that well on the iPhone, even the ones that are free, so it will be hard to imagine consumers will rush out and pay more than $.99 on a similar game.
That said, I hope that Nintendo will find other outlets for using the AR, because playing with those cards was kind of fun.
