Battleship is probably one of the most classic board games in existence. It ranks right up there with CandyLand and Tiddlywinks (which I know isn't a board game, just let it go). The game has technologically evolved like crazy over the years, but it's basically the same: players try to guess where their opponents had placed their ships. So how this is going to turn into an action movie is beyond me, but I've seen crazier ideas pan out.
Of course, we can't have a movie announcement without a corresponding video game. That would just be silly. And guess who is at the helm? It's Activision! And they're turning the video game into a first-person shooter!
Now I'm really scratching my head.
Double Helix Games is behind the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, while Studio Magic Pockets is in charge of versions for the 3DS, Wii, and DS. Battleship: The Game is a hybrid of strategy and first-person shooter gameplay…with aliens. Seriously.
From Activision's press release:
Inspired by the film's exciting action and stunning backdrop, the game is next-gen naval warfare that thrusts players into the middle of humanity's last stand against an unfamiliar menace. You'll play a guy named Cole Mathis as he fights off "aquatic-based extraterrestrial peril" in the Hawaiian islands.
So instead of sinking battleships in Battleship, we're shooting aliens. How is this really a Battleship game? Since the aliens are "aquatic-based," I assume we won't be sinking their ships.
At least we aren't shooting zombies or sinking zombie ships. Small victory.
