Hard mode:


  Beat the game once. Back at the Title screen, press any button. You'll notice 
  that the select icon will have changed from a Mushroom to Mario's head. Now 
  start a game to play on harder difficulty.
 Level select: 


  Beat the game in Hard mode to bring up a level select.
