Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Winding Gears: How to Complete the Repair Torigoth’s Crane Side Quest

The “Repair Torigoth’s Crane” side quest in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 can be one of the most frustrating ever, because of a little thing called RNG (random number generator). In this quest, you are asked to fix the town’s crane by finding five winding gears. These winding gears can be found by salvaging at one of the salvage points in the Gormott Province.

What’s unfortunate about this is that, unlike other side quests in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that require you to salvage for items, these winding gears are rather rare to find and RNG can cause it to be a seriously time-consuming issue even for only five of them. Thankfully, we’ve tried several methods of finding these winding gears to repair Torigoth’s crane, and we know the best way to do it.

How to Start the Repair Torigoth’s Crane Side Quest

Before you begin this side quest, you must first accept the quest “The Case of the Crane” by speaking with Eyvan who’s located right in front of Torigoth’s gates. Once you have that quest, you can go up the ramp to the crane and speak with Natheus, who will give you this quest to find the five winding gears.

How to Find Winding Gears in Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Winding Gears

Surprisingly enough, there’s no need to go looking for any other salvage points, as the closest one to you just past Torigoth’s fountain is your best bet. This is because of a couple of reasons. First, winding gears are rare as noted by their reddish-maroon glow, which don’t normally show up. What’s worse is that there are other rare items that you can find instead of winding gears.

To better your chances, you need to nail every single salvage quick-time event. You’ll know they are perfect if you see a golden glow around the circle when you press the button. This salvage point just so happens to be the easiest in terms of QTE’s. Unfortunately, that only solves part of the problem and you can still find yourself using 50 cylinders to find five of these winding gears.

The second crucial thing you need to do is buy the Silver Cylinders from the salvage merchant. These are pricey but if you master QTE’s, you’ll be raking in more money than you are spending. The silver ones have a higher chance of not only containing rare items, but more than one rare item. We’ve received three to four of these before on just one try.

Lastly, we highly recommend you only attempt this with a Blade that has the salvaging mastery ability. Like Dromarch’s botany for collecting materials, salvaging mastery will increase your chances of getting better (and more) items from salvage points. Level one is all you need.

With all of this, finding the five winding gears will be a breeze. An extra, optional way of bettering your chances in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is by raising Rex’s luck through accessories or the Affinity Chart. Prior to trying these methods, we used around 40 normal and silver cylinders to find only two winding gears, but using these tricks gave us the remaining three by only using five silver cylinders. Good luck!
