Overwatch Developers Discuss Potential Sequel

To say that Overwatch developers Blizzard created a hit with its 2016 FPS is an understatement. Ever since Overwatch debuted two years ago, the community surrounding it has grown bigger and bigger, whilst the game itself has developed into something that only seems to get better with each new event that comes out.

The game’s lore also has a tremendous amount of followers despite the game solely being a multiplayer shooter, a fact that the Overwatch developers are more than aware of. Speaking to GameSpot, Assistant Game Director Aaron Keller and Senior Game Producer Matthew Hawley talked about how far Overwatch has come as well as the potential of an Overwatch 2.

“I think at the core sitting here at the two-year anniversary, we’ve had a wildly successful 6v6 shooter game which has blown us away with how the community has responded to it,” said Keller. “We dip our toes into different areas here and there with the Archives event and Junkenstein. But I think our focus is really on keeping the community engaged with the 6v6 shooter that we have on the live service.”

“Running a live service game takes a lot of work and I hope the community knows we have been committed to continually improving the game and creating content,” Hawley added. “What people might not realize is the team now is significantly bigger than what it was when we shipped the game, and we have put all of that into working on the live game and the new maps, heroes, and events like Anniversary.”

As of the time of this writing, the Overwatch team are focused more on creating new content for the game and considering Overwatch’s international success, we can’t rightly blame them for being focused on the game they have as of now and not a sequel. Still, we’re sure that Overwatch 2 will prove to be just as popular as the first game, even if we aren’t yet ready to move on from the original.
