God of War Fails to Beat Fortnite in Revenue Despite Biggest Console Launch Ever

God of War has been setting the world on fire since it originally launched a month ago. The PS4 exclusive has broken records and made the word “boy” a worldwide phenomenon. The statistics for the global digital games market for April 2018 has been revealed, and it looks like the massive success of Kratos’ latest adventure still couldn’t beat Fortnite in terms of revenue.

God of War Fails To Beat Fortnite: God of War Breaks Records

According to the latest statistics by SuperData, God of War had the largest console exclusive digital launch of all time. It sold approximately 2.1 million digital units at launch, almost double that of the previous record holder Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End in 2016. We reported earlier this month that God of War is now the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive in history, reaching 3.1 million units in sales after its first three days of release.

God of War Fails To Beat Fortnite: Fortnite Breaks Records Too

Despite the unbelievable milestones achieved by God of War, Fortnite has somehow maintained its number one spot in terms of overall revenue. The battle royale game has broken more records yet again, and this time it’s for most additional content revenue in a single month by a console game. It also made a whopping $296 million across console, PC, and mobile platforms in April, which is a huge increase from the previous month’s $223 million.

Thanks to both God of War and Fortnite, console spending experienced an incredible 44 percent increase from last month. Overall, consumers spent $9.09 billion on digital games across all platforms in April 2018, which is an impressive two billion increase from the same period in 2017 at $7.42 billion. The industry achieved this thanks to console and mobile, which were the biggest growth drivers in April 2018.

Additionally, Honour of Kings retains the crown for the highest-grossing mobile game with $185 million in total revenue while League of Legends was the top earner for the PC. It’s also interesting to note that GTA V Online has finally shown signs of slowing down after steadily declining in revenue since the beginning of 2018, probably due to the popularity of battle royale games and lack of content updates by Rockstar Games.
