From Software’s Sekiro Shadows Die Twice has been said t0 be twice as hard as their other IP, Dark Souls, but that shouldn’t put you off buying it. Because this time the game is said to have a proper tutorial, already putting it miles ahead of Dark Souls which pretty much took players by the scruff of their necks and threw them into the deep end. While some may feel like this is the right way to go about introducing players, others feel like this actively discourages new players altogether.
Thankfully Activision, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice’s publisher, has spoken up about a tutorial for the game being implemented into the game. In an interview with Eurogamer, Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyuzaki stated that this time the game does a much better job in explaining what the players need to do. The reason for this change is a result of support from Activision, who seemed to be more than aware of the need for players to have a chance to understand the game before playing.
In the interview, Miyuzaki himself was aware that there needed to be some sort of change. He stated, “these things [tutorials] generally aren’t our forte, but we do need some support, and Activision is providing that.” He continued, “From Software has editorial and directive control over the game and the game’s contents; after you press the start button, it’s all up to the From team. That said, we do need help with some things and we are getting advice from Activision, but they do 100 percent respect our vision.”
This will be a relief to some hardcore gamers out there who may be concerned that gameplay difficulty will be ‘dumbed down’. But to us it seems as though the collaboration between From Software and Activision is that of equals, so we’re excited to see what the completed product will be when it officially releases.
