Shadow of the Tomb Raider is out Friday, although it’s available right now if you picked up the Croft Edition. While predominantly a single-player game, developer Eidos Montreal has spoken about going online previously. So are there any Shadow of the Tomb Raider multiplayer modes? Is there Shadow of the Tomb Raider co-op? We’re here to answer.
Are There any Shadow of the Tomb Raider Multiplayer or Co-op Modes?
Shadow of the Tomb Raider has plenty to do already, from Challenge Tombs, puzzle rooms, combat encounters, to just plain exploration. Unfortunately, the one thing the game doesn’t seem to have is multiplayer, whether co-op or otherwise. Not even score attack or leaderboards. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a purely single-player experience. The best you can do is share your nice photos online. However, this may not always be the case…
Will Co-op or Multiplayer be Coming to Shadow of the Tomb Raider?
Strangely enough, yes. While the base game of Shadow of the Tomb Raider is entirely single-player, it seems like the game will receive multiplayer in the form of co-op Challenge Tombs at a later date. The Shadow of the Tomb Raider season pass will add 7 new additional Challenge Tombs at some point in the next few months, and the pass clearly states that these will be playable in single-player or co-op.
Given that Shadow of the Tomb Raider doesn’t have any form of multiplayer, we’re unsure how these new co-op adventures will work. Since the Challenge Tombs are all based around puzzles, for the most part, we’re personally thinking of something along the lines of Portal 2‘s excellent co-op mode. A more close-to-home example would probably be Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris, the top-down Tomb Raider co-op spin-offs. Could we see these games re-created in the more traditional third-person style? That would certainly be something to get excited about.
