Sonic Team VP Wants To Remake Sonic Adventure

Speaking in a recent interview with Retro Gamer, the Sonic Team VP commented that he wants to develop a Sonic Adventure remake and fix the original’s “rough edges”. After 20 years since it initially launched on the Sega Dreamcast, as the first 3D iteration in the Sonic series, Takashi Iizuka believes a remake could finish what he started two decades ago.

While an HD port released in 2010 for the game, it was met with criticism for the half-hearted re-release. For many fans, a proper Sonic Adventure remake would require refining the controls, camera, and graphics using modern technology, which is exactly what Iizuka hopes to pursue.

Iizuka highlighted that it was “the first highspeed 3D action game that also featured a scenario highlighted with six different stories, the A-life Chao, six unique styles of gameplay”. In the time since, the legacy of Sonic Adventure remains intact as a “unique game offering even 20 years after release”.

This is certainly no confirmation that a Sonic Adventure remake is in the works, and could just be wishful thinking from a developer looking back on his career. Iizuka is currently busy with the production of Team Sonic Racingbut it’s possible that members of the team are exploring the potential for a Sonic Adventure remake with current generation technology.

Given the penchant for remastered collections of classic games in recent years, we could well see a bundle with a Sonic Adventure 2 remake included, if enough demand for these remakes become apparent in the near future.

The demand for the Sonic series is strong enough to warrant a blockbuster Sonic movie, expected to release in 2019. In August last year, the “leak” of a poster for the movie caused discord after fans questioned whether it was fake, with Chris Pratt apparently joining the cast, and controversy over missing shoelaces.
