Assassin's Creed Odyssey ending

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey ending changed by Ubisoft after fan backlash

Ubisoft has confirmed that changes to the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey ending for the Shadow Heritage DLC episode are coming. The changes will allow players who weren’t too bothered about romance options, or players who were following same-sex relationships, to choose a non-romantic story thread. The developer has also promised that the next episode, Bloodlines, will take into account the choices that players make in Shadow Heritage.

The changes come as a result of some fans causing a stir over the type of character one of the game’s protagonists, Kassandra, ends up with at the end of Shadow Heritage. Described as being “the most whimpy, dim-witted, sleepy-eyed oaf character model I have seen in the game,” by one fan, Natakas was the romance option that fans were pushed into a relationship with originally. Ubisoft commented on the initial backlash, explaining that the reaction represented “a learning experience” for the company.

“Understanding how attached you feel to your Kassandra and your Alexios is humbling and knowing we let you down is not something we take lightly,” the publisher noted.

The developer then reached out to LQBTQ charity GLAAD to resolve the situation. And it appears to have been a pretty simple change, with Ubisoft now including the choice for players to refuse a relationship to further their bloodline.

The majority of fans thanked the developer for introducing the change, being the first time a company has backtracked on a decision of this nature since Mass Effect 3‘s ending. Other fans suggested that Shadow Heritage raises an argument over how much the fans really care about the surrounding lore of the series, while others have said the change will only work to ostracise those who were happy with the series as it was. Basically, Ubisoft is never going to be able to please everyone but the changes made at least introduces the character consistency that the original ending of Shadow Heritage had introduced.
