Super Mario Maker 2

Super Mario Maker 2 coming to Switch in June 2019

Super Mario Maker 2 is real and coming to Nintendo Switch in June 2019. The sequel to 2015’s Super Mario Maker brings a host of new options to building levels.

Nintendo announced Super Mario Maker 2 during the February 13 Nintendo Direct. The new game continues to use assets styled after Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros and adds assets from Super Mario 3D World. No specific date was given for the sequel.

Super Mario Maker 2 looks to be keeping everything that was in the previous title and simply adding more on top of that. For fans of the game, it’s perfect, as the first game featured an ingenious selection of fan-created levels. A Switch port of Super Mario Maker has been long sought after by Nintendo fans, and a full-blown sequel is even better.

The game’s logo now features Luigi alongside his brother Mario, although it’s unclear how or if this will translate to gameplay. There could be a move to collaborative level design with two or more people working on the same level.

Nintendo’s official release is scant on details, simply stating “in this new game, players can create the Super Mario courses of their dreams, with access to even more tools, items, and features.” So we’ll have to wait to see more.

A number of well-known game designers took to the original Super Mario Maker, creating tricky levels using Mario’s toolkit. Koji Igarashi, famous for directing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, designed a number of Super Mario Maker levels. Others paid homage to games like Super Meat Boy using the Mario Maker tools.

The original Super Mario Maker sold over four million copies on the Wii U over its life cycle. The game was ported to 3DS in December 2016, although that version lacked a number of online features.

Super Mario Maker 2 is slated to release in June 2019 for the Nintendo Switch.
