The Warcraft DRM-free GOG versions are here! Warcraft and Warcraft 2 are both available on GOG.com as DRM-free purchases. The expansion Beyond the Dark Portal is also included in this package. This is a continuation of the partnership between Blizzard Entertainment and GOG that saw Diablo released on the DRM-free platform earlier this month. The games can be purchased individually or as part of a bundle to save yourself a little money.
Both of the Warcraft GOG games have been upgraded to work on modern machines, just as they did in the time of their original release. Much like the Diablo launch, Warcraft 2 will have two separate versions in the same package. The first version will be exactly like the current CD-ROM version of Warcraft 2 that allows players to connect to Battle.net. The second version of Warcraft 2 features several improvements including support for higher resolutions and upscaling. Unfortunately, you can’t play on Battle.net with the better graphics in the upgraded version of Warcraft 2.
Warcraft: Orcs & Humans is the game that started it all for what ultimately became one of Blizzard Entertainment’s biggest and most powerful franchises. The once-peaceful Orcs became bloodthirsty thanks to corruption from a Pitlord and charged through a portal to invade the world of humans. Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness continues the adventure with several improvements to the franchise and was eventually followed with an expansion titled Beyond the Dark Portal.
You can buy the Warcraft GOG versions in a bundle for $14.99 or you can buy Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft 2: Battle.net Edition individually for $5.99 and $9.99, respectively. We still don’t know what other classic Blizzard Entertainment games will be making their way to GOG; Diablo 2 is obviously the elephant in the room for unreleased titles that players are hoping to see get a DRM-free release. Hopefully we’ll find out about other titles sooner rather than later!
