With Mortal Kombat 11 set to sweep us off our feet (and other limbs) in just a few days, Warner Bros. Interactive has opted to double down on our desire to beat each other senseless. Thus, it’s hosting a special competition, er, Kompetition rather, to find the best spine-ripping players out there.
In conjunction with NetherRealm Studios and Intersport, the publisher has announced the Mortal Kombat 11 Pro Kompetition 2019/2020. It’s the kick-off to a global esports program surrounding the bloody fighting game, with a lot up for grabs.
The tournament will offer nine different live tournaments across North America, Latin America and Europe. During these, players will have a shot at winning part of a prize pool worth over $150,000. But they’ll also have a chance to compete in a final tournament in early 2020, with only 12 spots open for final Kombat, as it were. The winner will score $100,000 if they survive the carnage.
The first stop of the tour will take place during Combo Breaker 2019 in Chicago, which runs from May 24 through 26. From there, we’ll see other stops as well, including EVO 2019, CEO in Daytona Beach, and Celtic Throwdown in Ireland. The full schedule can be found here.
The trailer below gives you a pretty good idea as to how serious Warner Bros. is about the Kompetition. We get a glimpse at up-and-coming fighting superstars showing superiority, as well as legends fighting for a spot.
Those of you that are interested in a shot at glory can register at the official esports page here. There are various ways that you can get into the Grand Finals, including a last chance tournament. And who knows, you just might be the one that can conquer Shao Khan and say you conquered Mortal Kombat. Not everyone gets to say that. (Well, maybe they can say it, but have they truly earned it?)
We’ll see how the tournament fares when it kicks off in a few weeks. But you won’t have to wait that long to rip limbs off of unsuspecting combatants. Mortal Kombat 11 releases on April 23 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. You can check out our preview here.
