Super Mario Maker 2 Mystery Costumes

Are there mystery costumes in Super Mario Maker 2?

There’s been some confusion over the possibility of Super Mario Maker 2 mystery costumes being included in the game. The Nintendo Switch title is the follow-up to the 2015 Wii U and 3DS game, and these skins were available for its predecessor. It stands to reason that costumes should also be available to wear in Super Mario Maker 2 then. Find out the definitive answer to this question by reading our guide.

Are Super Mario Maker 2 Mystery Costumes available?

Super Mario Maker 2 Mystery Costumes

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there are no Super Mario Maker 2 mystery costumes available to unlock. That’s right, one of the elements from the first game has been thrown out by Nintendo, and we’re not entirely sure why.

Nintendo confirmed as much in an interview with GameXplain in late May and, in doing so, left quite a lot of fans on Reddit feeling sad. The Mystery Mushroom was one of the more fun elements that you could add into a Super Mario Maker level due to the fact that you could turn Mario into any other 8-bit character.

In total, there were 153 costumes for players to unlock in Super Mario Maker, but every single one of them is absent from its sequel. As such, you’ll only be able to play as the character you pick to start a level with.

It seems strange that Nintendo would decide to omit these skins from Super Mario Maker 2. They acted as a reward for completing certain courses and on different difficulties too. The Switch’s processing power is better than that of the Wii U too, which Super Mario Maker came out on. In that respect, any excuse about Switch consoles not being able to render these sprites is null and void.

Nintendo could backtrack and add these costumes in down the line as DLC. For now, though, you’ll have to make do without them and enjoy the other elements that Super Mario Maker 2 has available.
