tell gr disappointing games

Tell GR | Has 2019 been a disappointing year for games so far?

2019 has had a few hits alongside a bunch of misses. As both the PS4 and Xbox One wind down their respective life cycles, it hasn’t been the most exciting year for new releases thus far — but has it really been that bad?

The GameRevolution team discussed their thoughts on whether this year has been a disappointing one below, and as always, leave your own response in the comments section. Our favorite will be featured in tomorrow’s Tell GR!

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “It has. I’m looking through our extensive reviews library, and of the games I’ve played this year only a handful have stood out to me. I had a lot of fun with My Friend PedroCrash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled was a blast, and I played Apex Legends to death when it first released, but few other games have resonated with me in 2019. The latter half of the year is shaping up to be a lot better, though.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “One of the best games ever made, Resident Evil 2 remake, released this year, so in a way it’s one of the best years for games ever. Overall, I think studios blew their wad in 2018, and we haven’t seen a ton of blockbuster games in 2019 because the next wave of killer titles is in development. Towards the latter half of the year we have quite a few hyped games coming out that will likely make up for the relative lull we’ve had in releases this year. The Outer Worlds, Modern Warfare, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, Borderlands 3, Death Stranding, Doom Eternal, Jedi Fallen Order, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Link’s Awakening, and Pokemon Sword and Shield are all coming out in the next six months, and that’s just the huge AAA releases off the top of my head. There’s also a barrage of AA and indie games coming out that are sure to make some waves.@

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “I think the first half of 2019 has been a decent year for video games. Apex Legends, Far Cry New Dawn (in co-op), Devil May Cry 5, The Division 2, Sekiro, Days Gone, and Rage 2 have kept me very entertained. With that said, some titles missed more than they hit, with Anthem being the biggest disappointment so far. The first six months are always the slowest, but 2019 hasn’t been too bad.”

Michael Leri, features editor: “2019 has been better than most people probably give it credit for so, personally, I’ve been more than fine with it. Between Rage 2 (which I still defend), Devil May Cry 5, Trials Rising, Blood and Truth, RE2, CTR, and MK11, I’ve had a great time this year, especially since I’ll be playing those last two for a long time. It has admittedly been a good year for backlog game given all the time between every new release, but there are still more than enough big hitters in all of 2019 to more than make it a worthy year. And Doom Eternal has yet to come out, the video game to end all video games.”
