Elan Lee started at Microsoft Game Studios as a Lead Designer during the original Xbox era, but shortly afterward, he co-founded 42 Entertainment, a media company responsible for Halo 2's "I Love Bees" alternate reality game (in addition to the "Why So Serious?" campaign for The Dark Knight), but now he's joining Microsoft's Xbox Entertainment Studios.
I remember wandering around a Best Buy nearly 10 years ago (holy crap, it's been a long time) and seeing the ilovebees.com domain appear after a burst of static at the end of a Halo 2 commercial. The entire wall of the home-theater department displayed the URL, but I felt like I was the only one to see it.
I can't remember alternate reality games before then, but I do remember rushing home and immediately visiting ilovebees.com, as if I was lucky and privledged to be in on the secret. Deadline reports that Elan Lee will aid Nancy Tellem in bringing Halo: The Television Series and other Xbox Entertainment endeavors to live on Xbox One.
Gamers are supposed to be able to influence the Xbox One-specific TV shows, right? I hope that process isn't similar to alternate reality games, seeing as getting deep into those ends up sucking years off your life.
