DuckTales: Remastered leaving digital storefronts this week

Capcom announced WayForward’s DuckTales: Remastered will be leaving digital storefronts forever beginning this week. In anticipation of DuckTales: Remastered leaving digital storefronts, Capcom is putting the game on sale for 75% off its normal $14.99 U.S. price.

Capcom announced the DuckTales news in a blog post. The game will leave the Xbox 360 digital store (where it can also be purchased for play on the Xbox One via backwards compatibility) at 5 PM PDT on August 8. DuckTales: Remastered leaves the PS3 and Wii U storefronts on August 9 at 8 AM and 4:59 PM, respectively. The post does not list a date for when DuckTales: Remastered leaves Steam (only that it will leave at 4:59 PM PDT), but the game’s Steam page says the sale will end on August 10. As of writing, DuckTales: Remastered is on sale for $3.74 on the U.S. Steam, Nintendo eShop, and Xbox Live storefronts, but it is not yet on sale on the PlayStation Store.

Capcom did not give a reason for the news of DuckTales: Remastered leaving digital storefronts, but, given the fact that DuckTales: Remastered originally released in August 2013, it’s likely that the game’s license from Disney is ending. This wouldn’t be the first time an expired license made a game unpurchasable. Activision infamously pulled multiple Transformers games from digital stores in late 2017, which, as IGN later reported, was due to the company’s contract with Hasbro expiring. The company had also previously removed several other licensed games from digital stores, such as 2010’s Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.

According to Capcom, disc-based versions of DuckTales: Remastered will still be able to be installed and played after this week, and players who have bought the game digitally before it leaves storefronts will still be able to redownload it later. This comes in contrast to the popular horror demo P.T., which Konami removed from the PlayStation Store in April 2015 and is no longer downloadable by those who used to have a copy but removed it from their systems.
