A PS5 2020 launch date has been officially confirmed by Sony. After years of waiting with bated breath, the Japanese hardware manufacturer has categorically stated that we’ll be able to get our hands on the next-generation PlayStation 5 sometime next year.
Rumors (and frankly, common sense) have predicted that we would be getting a PlayStation 5 at some point, although there haven’t been any firm details as to when players could expect to get their hands on the console. Now, a post on the PlayStation blog (highlighted by @Nibellion) and an article from Wired have given us the information that we all want to know.

Here is a machine-translated quote from the PlayStation blog post with the big announcement:
Meanwhile, today we will inform you that the name of our next-generation machine is “PlayStation 5” (PS5), and that the release is scheduled for the year-end sales season of 2020.
The Wired piece confirms this launch windows: the PS5 2020 launch date will be sometime in the holiday season next year. While some of us may have hoped (perhaps somewhat irrationally) that it would launch before the end of 2019, Sony had previously confirmed that we wouldn’t be getting a PS5 in late 2019 or early 2020.
That’s not all we’ve learned about the PlayStation 5, mind. Central to the next-generation console is an equally-tantalizing next-generation controller that will boast several improvements. While we can safely guess that it will probably be called the DualShock 5, Sony hasn’t yet officially settled on a name just yet.
As much as it might pain us to wait, there isn’t much more in the way of hard details about the release date other than the fact that it will be sometime in the tail end of 2020, right before the holiday season. At least you’ll have plenty of time to save up for Sony’s newest console!
