Blizzard’s timeless hero shooter launched on Nintendo Switch recently, for the first time allowing players to enjoy the game on the go. That’s one inherent benefit of the platform, but what about the optional benefit of added Amiibo functionality? Here’s what you need to know about Overwatch Amiibo support on Switch.
Can I use my Amiibo in Overwatch?
Whenever a third-party game gets ported to Nintendo’s hybrid console somewhat late in its life, lots of fans like to see Amiibo support integrated in order to offer a better value proposition. It helps to offset the wait and often higher pricing when compared to the older existing versions of a game, which have most likely either been on sale or had their prices cut entirely.
Keeping this in mind, it’s unfortunate that we have to report Overwatch on Nintendo Switch features no Amiibo functionality. None of your existing figurines will interface with the game in any way, no matter how many times you might choose to scan their NFC chips in vain. By the same token, no future Amiibo figures are planned to be compatible with the game moving forward.

While Diablo III — the last Blizzard title to make its way to Switch — did, in fact, feature Amiibo support and even launched its own bespoke Amiibo figure, for some reason such features have since been dropped in the case of Overwatch. It seems like somewhat of an odd decision, as Amiibo designs for Tracer, Winston, Bastion, et al would presumably be far more marketable than the Diablo Loot Goblin. Especially odd when you consider that the Overwatch team has been very open about lending its characters to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, making it clear that they’re open to further collaborations with Nintendo.
Who knows. Maybe the Loot Goblin Amiibo was a flop and left a bad taste in their mouths?
