Modern Warfare opening weekend made twice as much as the Joker movie

The latest numbers in the battle of video games versus other entertainment mediums are out — and gaming has reigned supreme once again. The Joker movie box office was pretty impressive, setting worldwide records for an R-Rated movie — but it was handily thrashed by the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare opening weekend. What’s more, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beat the Joker’s numbers by more than double.

Activision has just had its investor call for the quarter where they detail how the business has been doing lately. One of their points of pride was the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare opening weekend which brought in more than $600 million in revenue, a fact that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick was all too happy to highlight.

Call of Duty is once again the [top-selling] new premium game of the year, proving the enduring nature of the franchise across console, PC, mobile, and esports,” said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick in a news release from the company. “In its first three days of release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare more than doubled the box office opening of Joker.”

To put things into perspective, the Joker movie brought in $234 million worldwide in its opening weekend, setting records for an R-Rated film and making it the biggest opening movie for the month of October so far. That’s slightly over a third of the $600 million Activision raked in with the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare opening weekend.

Currently, Joker has reclaimed the top spot at the box office last weekend and brought in more than $800 million worldwide. Those figures certainly beat Modern Warfare’s numbers, but Infinity Ward’s latest first-person shooter has only been out for a single weekend while Joker has just concluded its fourth weekend of release around the world.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare opening weekend has shown, once again, that video games are the biggest entertainment medium by far. Joker might be in the lead for now, but you can bet that Captain Price and his crack squad of commandos will soon catch up to the clown.
