Will there be Assassin’s Creed Valhalla microtransactions?

Ubisoft took a year off from the annualized Assassin’s Creed release cycle in 2019 and devoted some extra development time to the upcoming AC Valhalla. With this Norse-themed installment marking the series’ debut on next-generation PS5 and Xbox Series X hardware, will it be a new start for the franchise or will we see some maligned features creep back in? At the time of writing, Ubisoft hasn’t made any official announcements regarding microtransactions in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. While it’s possible that they won’t feature at all due to prior backlash, it’s more likely that microtransactions will indeed make a return. Going on the company’s previous form, these could extend well beyond just cosmetics.

Previous Assassin’s Creed titles have featured an array of weapons, mounts, and outfits that impact player statistics as well as making cosmetic changes. In addition, premium purchasables like XP boosters and collectible maps have served as “time savers” to expedite the grind for completionists.

Such microtransactions have drawn the ire of many players, though whether they’ll make a return in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla remains to be seen. Ubisoft could be taking the feedback to heart, however, as Creative Director Ashraf Ismail indicating that Valhalla seeks to eliminate unnecessary grinding. If the grind isn’t there, in theory, there’s no need for microtransactions to ease its burden.
