Cassette Beasts battle

Cassette Beasts mixes Pokemon and an ’80s aesthetic

If you’re looking for that retro Pokemon experience, then Cassette Beasts may be the game for you. This upcoming new title from Bytten Studios beautifully blends Pokemon with a cool Eighties aesthetic and it looks like Cassette Beasts might just deliver what a lot of games like this are missing.

The remote island of New Wirral is filled with strange creatures, some of which are friendly and some of which are very much not. Brave people travel to this island to battle, and it’s a little different than you might expect from a game like this. It also happens to be an open-world experience with new tools that advance the genre such as wings which let you float down cliffs.

ALSO: Animal Crossing’s wholesome community is a breath of fresh air

To start, you use an old-school cassette player instead of Poke Balls. You also don’t send your creatures out into battle — you transform into them. Things take on a bit of a Yu-Gi-Oh! flavor, too, with the ability to fuse creatures together into even more powerful monsters.

It certainly looks like a cool game, but you’re going to have to wait to play it. Development is still underway and the indie devs are currently looking for publishing partners while targeting a PC and possible console release. For now, you can check out the Cassette Beasts reveal trailer below and find out more about the game at cassettebeasts.com.
