New open-world Harry Potter game coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X – Report

A new Harry Potter game is reportedly on the way for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, and it will allegedly feature an open-world Hogwarts for players to explore. This long-rumored upcoming game is reportedly going to let players explore Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the surrounding area in a new next-gen experience.

Bloomberg reports that two people currently working on the project have confirmed that it’s real. Avalanche Studios has been working on it for some time, ultimately targeting a next-gen release for the PS5 and Xbox sometime in 2021. Unlike previous games, you wouldn’t be playing one of the game’s characters — instead, you would create your own character to explore this magical world.

Unbeknownst to us, we got our first look at the game a couple of years ago when a trailer leaked. Bloomberg’s sources say that that trailer is indeed real, but most of the rumors that have come out since then are said to be inaccurate. The report does not state whether or not a Nintendo Switch, PC, or mobile version of the game is in the works.

Developers working on this unannounced game are said to have been troubled by recent comments made by J.K. Rowling which have been viewed as transphobic. Avalanche Studios management has reportedly not touched on the subject of the comments to its staff. Rowling, for her part, released an essay explaining her views on the subject. She is said to have minimal involvement in the development of the game.

Despite the controversy, development on this upcoming game is still going on. We should be getting our first look at this new open-world Harry Potter game sometime later in the year. You can see the leaked trailer that is likely from this game below. In the meantime, you can fulfill your desire to explore Hogwart’s with this cool fan-made Minecraft mod.
