Sekiro boss rush mode and more coming in free October update

Sekiro boss rush mode is finally coming to this super-challenging game in a free update set to arrive later in October this year, and that’s not all. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is also getting new costumes, a Dark Souls-style “afterimage,” and probably even more than that.

Gaming industry tweeter Nibel highlighted the update on the game’s official website. While it probably doesn’t detail everything that’s coming in the October 2020 update, it does hit the major points.

First and foremost is the introduction of a Sekiro boss rush mode.  According to the machine-translated update page, players will be able to have a rematch with a defeated boss “to your heart’s content,” although it’s a little lax on details. Will this feature be activated within the game world or will it be added to the menu?

PC players, of course, already had access to a boss rush mode thanks to a mod that lets you fight bosses and minibosses in any order you’d prefer. As one would expect, there are plenty of other strange modes like the ability to play as Shrek or Woody from the Toy Story films.)

Arriving alongside the Sekiro boss rush mode is a new “Afterimage” system. This is more or less the same thing as Dark Souls’ “ghostlike apparitions” — players will be able to transmit ghostly images of themselves lasting approximately 30 seconds alongside a message. This mechanic is well-familiar to players in Soulslike games, so it’s no surprise that Sekiro is getting it, too.

The last new item arriving in this update is a handful of new costumes. Players will have their choice of three kinds of costumes, but they won’t be easy to get: you’ll have to complete some kind of unspecified conditions to unlock them.

Sekiro boss rush mode and all of these other goodies will be arriving in a free update for all platforms on Thursday, October 29, 2020. It’s unclear if the update will deploy worldwide for all regions, but I can’t see why it wouldn’t. We’re sure to find out more as we get closer to this update’s October 2020 release date.
