Legendary loot boxes can be purchased through the in-game store, but you’d probably rather save your money. Fortunately, the developers give out free Legendary loot boxes during special events, specifically Overwatch Anniversary events. To get one, you only need to log in to the game while the event is active.
The first time this happened was back in 2018, where players received a free Golden loot box. Each of these boxes contained a guaranteed event Legendary. Since then, the team at Blizzard has offered one free loot box during each of the game’s anniversary periods. Each anniversary is typically held at the end of May stretching through the beginning of June. All you have to do to claim the free loot box is log in.

However, it is possible to get a Legendary loot box outside of the single anniversary freebie. While these events are active, purchasing up to 50 loot boxes will give a guaranteed Legendary box. It’s not ideal since it costs real-world cash, but the option is there anyone yearning for more high-level skins. It’s also a good chance to score any exclusive skins that may disappear for the following season.
If you want to get a Legendary loot box in Overwatch, it’s best to wait for an Anniversary event. Each year the team gives out one free Golden loot box to every player. You can spend your money to buy one if you choose, but free is always better.
