What is flyting?

Flyting is an old rap battle-esque technique where two people exchange rhyming insults. Celtic, Norse, and English people used this sort of verbal quarrel between the fifth and sixteenth centuries. Valhalla takes place in 873 AD, so this lines up. Flyting is the mask icon shown in the above picture. They are found in most towns, especially ones with Norse influence.

Winning at flyting breaks down into two categories: rhyming and tone. Rhyming is the most important so be quick to notice which of the three options rhymes with the last word said by Eivor’s opponent. The game will always have an option to let players repeat lines they may have missed.

Once the rhyming lines have been narrowed down, players should pick the one most akin to the tone of the battle. For example, if the opponent says something like, “Eivor is slow, stupid, and dull,” picking something that makes fun of them fits more than something about killing them. So instead of picking, “I’ll bash in your brains and kick in your skull,” pick something closer to, “Your helmet is useless, guarding the emptiest skull.” That second answer is as playful as the rhyme that proceeded while the first one threatens them with murder.

This also applies to how they say what they say. If they list off three things about Eivor, it would probably be best to return in kind with a list about them. Be sure to also match their rhythm and try to pick a response that directly calls to what they just said. If they talk about how good they are at flyting, call out their pride. If they say something horny, as Stigr the Amorous does, respond with a horny answer. That will not only open up the path for victory but also give players a chance to romance him.

Flyting tends to have one wrong answer, one less correct answer, and one more correct answer. Picking a more incorrect answer won’t lose the battle, but it does make Eivor’s chances of winning worse.
