At a recent PlayStation 4 hands-on event, Sony gave us hands-on time with Killzone: Shadow Fall and promised that the impending shooter will receive a lot of varied post-release support.
Guerilla Games presented a lengthy chunk of single-player gameplay as well as time with Shadow Fall's highly customizable multiplayer mode, but gamers will perhaps be more interested to hear that Sony will be providing some downloadable content after release completely free of charge.
You will need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play Killzone: Shadow Fall online, but with it you'll have access to DLC maps and multiplayer support through Killzone.com. Don't confuse these multiplayer maps with the content from Shadow Fall's paid-for Season Pass which will provide a cooperative mode, new arena maps for co-op, and two more "multiplayer expansion packs" to be detailed later. The expansion packs and map packs covered by the Season Pass do not include maps for Killzone: Shadow Fall's built-in multiplayer mode… such maps will be released for free so as not to fragment the online community.
Killzone's web portal will let you do all kinds of expected things, but the multiplayer and long-term development support paint a more complete picture for a game many may have ignored as just another shooter or another potentially disappointing launch game.
Sony's Killzone push means that Shadow Fall will ship with a 10+ hour single-player campaign, 24-player online multiplayer, and 10 multiplayer maps on disc. When you consider how next-gen consoles typically come up empty-handed for software shortly after launch, free DLC maps will go a long way in extending the entertainment you have out of just one launch game.
Killzone: Shadow Fall is landing at reatilers side by side with PlayStation 4 on November 15th.
