When was Cyberpunk 2077 first teased?

It’s been a long time since CD Projekt Red first teased Cyberpunk 2077. Given the buggy, incomplete condition the game was released in, fans are concerned at how long the game had been in development. Sure, the quests are great, but it doesn’t seem like much time could have been spent on the AI and bug-testing, and customization is entirely missing. Well, those who have seen the state of the game firsthand will be surprised to find out when Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced.

When was Cyberpunk 2077 first announced?

The first teaser for Cyberpunk 2077 dropped during the CD Projekt RED Group Summer Conference on May 30, 2012. The final title hadn’t been revealed at this point, and it was just described as “a new triple-A game based on the cult classic Cyberpunk pen & paper RPG system.” Pre-production started around this time, with around 50 people being assigned to establish the foundation for the game.

The game’s official title was revealed in a trailer on October 19, 2012, but it wasn’t until January 10, 2013, that we’d see the first teaser trailer. This is the trailer showing the Cyberpsycho woman fighting the NCPD that ended with the now-infamous “Coming: When it’s ready,” release date. After that teaser, CD Projekt Red went silent about the game for five years.

In 2018, the first Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay was released. A 48-minute walkthrough took players through a few of the game’s initial missions. At this point, the UI was much different, as was the character creation, though the narrative seems like it was complete at this point aside from small changes.

The game started getting major reveals from E3 2019 on. At the Xbox conference, Keanu Reeves was shown to be breathtaking when he was revealed as the face of Johnny Silverhand. From then on, fans received regular content updates culminating with the Night City Wire series of videos leading up to launch.
