To unlock the Dark World levels in SMBF, players have to first play through the normal Light World version of the stage first and beat the record time for that stage. The record time can be seen on the level select screen at the top, as shown in the above picture. It is on the right with a little medal near the time.

It can also be seen during the level as well and is in the upper left corner of the screen. The targeted time is next to the current time. The game even has a little tracker that can help players see if they are running behind or are on track. The time is also finally shown at the end screen when Dr. Fetus snatches away Nugget. Given all of these ways to see the time, it is not hard to know what time has to be beaten.

Once the time has been beaten, press the X button on Switch, Triangle on PS4, and Y button on Xbox to switch to the Dark World version of that world. Levels that have been unlocked will show up as white squares. Remember that collectibles are not tied to unlocking levels.

Some times can seem rather difficult. To move faster, jump and do a punch attack. This acts as a dash, which is essential for clearing the targeted times. Do this as often as possible. Dying does not add to the clock so don’t be afraid to jump into a saw blade if there’s room for improvement.

The game will keep track on whether or not the player is ahead or behind schedule to hit the targeted time. These show up as green or red numbers in the upper left. These are good indicators to keep in mind but they are not all knowing.

Be sure to look for shortcuts as some stages have areas that can be bypassed or jumped over. This game has so many permutations so looking them up may be almost impossible, but some of them will be more noticeable on future runs as players have learned the game more.

Also try not to get collectibles on speed runs. These only slow players down.
