Oculus Quest 2 Extra Storage | Can you upgrade the memory?

The Oculus Quest 2 is the biggest and most impressive VR headset that isn’t attached to a PC or console. But this detachment can lead to players wanting to upgrade the memory in the system since the games aren’t stored on another system. So are there Oculus Quest 2 extra storage options? If so, how do players expand the memory?

How to get more storage for the Oculus Quest 2

There is no way to upgrade the Oculus Quest 2 storage. It has no external slots so users are stuck with the model they bought since memory cards or SD chip slots are not included. This means 256 GB and 64 GB users will always have to live with what they have. 64 GB users can buy the 256 GB version, but that is quite an expensive way to upgrade the storage space since that means basically buying a whole new headset. Websites claiming they can upgrade an Oculus Quest 2’s storage are probably not worth looking into.

Users who are running up against their storage limit will have to do good ol’ fashioned some hard drive managing to keep within their storage space boundaries. Be sure to delete completed games, especially bigger games like The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners. Most VR titles are pretty small downloads so this should not be too hard for most people.

Players can also work around this by installing some games on their PC and using a link cable to play those games on that PC instead of on the headset. Many Oculus games are cross-buy and doing this frees up space on the headset. This does cut the portability, but it is an option.

Given all of these limitations, it might be best for players to wait it out and hope for a bigger Oculus Quest 3 sometime down the line. The original Oculus Quest debuted in May 2019 and launched with a 64 GB variant and a 128 GB one. The Oculus Quest 2 released in October 2020 and not only had the 64 GB base, but a 256 GB version as well. Given this trend, it is probable that Oculus will up the storage on the next version of the headset and satiate players who want more. External storage options are unlikely, however.
