Amp (AMP) cryptocurrency is up over 50% in the last 24 hours, thanks to rumors of a collaboration with Amazon. According to said speculation, the e-commerce giant is working with Amp and Algorand (ALGO) to implement a crypto-based payment system. This could result in Amazon accepting Bitcoin (BTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu tokens (SHIB), and more forms of crypto in 2021.
Does Amazon accept BTC payments?
Amazon could start accepting Bitcoin (BTC) payments in 2021. According to rumors, a collaboration between Amazon, Amp, and Algorand may also see the retailer accept popular altcoins like DOGE and SHIB starting this year.
These rumors stem from YouTuber BitBoy Crypto, who claims that an Amazon insider is responsible for leaking the plans. Amazon is currently hiring a Digital Currency and Blockchain Product Lead, with the successful candidate taking charge of “Amazon’s Digital Currency and Blockchain strategy and product roadmap.”
While there’s an official roadmap in place, it isn’t yet clear if this will allow customers to checkout their baskets using crypto in 2021. Amazon accepting crypto at checkout before the end of the year would require a pretty tight turnaround — with almost unlimited capital, however, Amazon is the company to do it.
One of the factors preventing cryptocurrency from breaking into the mainstream has been a relative inability to spend it. Should the e-commerce world leader start accepting crypto, that could cease to be a concern. Amazon sells groceries, toiletries, entertainment, and everything in between; it could soon be possible (and convenient) to subsist entirely on cryptocurrency.
Only time will tell if the rumored plan comes to fruition. Until then, Amazon is keeping pretty busy withing the world of video games. New World is Amazon Game Studios’ new MMORPG, which is currently in beta. The closed beta is already proving very popular, though there could be an open test on the way next month.
