Pokemon Go: Why is there a gold ring in the sky?

If you’ve been playing Pokemon Go lately, you might notice an ominous gold ring in the sky. They’re lurking high up and they can be quite hard to spot, but they look set to change the Pokemon Go landscape. If you’ve been catching and battling and spot a ring hovering over you, fear not – we’ve got all the information you’ll need.

Pokemon Go: gold ring in the sky explained

gold rings

The gold rings in the sky in Pokemon Go are there to tease an upcoming event involving the rare Pokemon, Hoopa.

Developer Niantic has been teasing the arrival of Hoopa, which first appeared in Generation VI. The Mythic Pokemon is likely to arrive in the game by the end of August, at the end of the ongoing Ultra Unlock event. Once that’s over, you’ll likely see the gold rings providing a portal for Hoopa to enter your game world.

The rings are a clear Hoopa tease, as the Pokemon’s Confined appearance involves it being trapped in a set of gold rings, before bursting out to unleash its full power. We got to see this in the anime shorts Hoopa’s Surprise Ring Adventures – though it hasn’t been in any Pokemon games until now.

Currently, the rings have no in-game purpose, and are there solely to provide an ominous presence in the sky. If you try and tap on them, nothing will happen. Additionally, sometimes the rings don’t even appear. They’re appearing randomly right now, but this could change. When the Hoopa event starts, they’ll likely start cropping up more frequently.

Therefore, you should keep an eye on the Pokemon Go gold rings. They’re sure to contain a very rare Pokemon.
