Of all Nintendo franchises, F-Zero might have been done the dirtiest. Since the console launched, fans have hoped for an F-Zero Switch release date, but Nintendo remains content to let the series lay dormant. We’ll look at the chances of the series getting another entry below.
Will the Switch get an F-Zero release date?
A new F-Zero is one of Nintendo’s most-requested games. Unfortunately, despite massive fan support, no F-Zero Switch release date has materialized. The original game is available via Nintendo Switch Online. However, despite N64 games making it to Switch Online, there’s been no announcement that F-Zero X will be released on the platform.
A new F-Zero game hasn’t been released outside of Japan since F-Zero GP Legend hit Game Boy Advance in 2003. Despite its high-speed racing on technical tracks being a perfect companion to Mario Kart’s more straightforward, accessible kart racing, Nintendo doesn’t seem to know what to do with the franchise. Takaya Imamura, who was with the series throughout its existence has made comments that seem to indicate Nintendo isn’t sure how to evolve F-Zero past GP Legend, and doesn’t want to re-hash the same gameplay.
Of course, this mentality is so Nintendo. It’s released tens of side-scrolling Mario games, all of which play similarly, but is supposedly afraid of making a sixth main entry in the F-Zero series. Given that few games have matched the difficult and rewarding gameplay found in the franchise, it doesn’t seem too realistic of a concern. However, only Nintendo knows why it makes the sometimes strange decisions it does.
Hopefully, fans will continue to rally for an F-Zero Switch release date, and we’ll see it soon. Nintendo has shown that it’ll revive series that have laid dormant for a while, so perhaps they’ll bring this one back when the time is right.
