Halo TV series canon

Halo TV series will be a ‘separate timeline’ from the games

The Halo TV series canon will “differ” potentially significantly from the established lore for games such as the recently released Halo Infinite, as well as the various comics and books based on the games, but will also use existing lore events “wherever they make sense for a linear narrative.” However, the series and the games will be on “separate timelines.” So what is the Halo TV show Silver Timeline about?

Is the Halo TV series canon with the games?

Halo TV series canon

The Halo TV series will not completely follow established series canon from the games and books, although the show will “use the existing Halo lore, history, canon, and characters” whenever they make sense.

According to Halo franchise creative director Frank O’Connor, the Halo 2022 show and games will follow “two parallel, VERY similar, but ultimately separate timelines.” In other words, a lot about the Halo show will be very familiar to fans, but may “differ in subtle and not so subtle ways” depending on what is needed for the storyline being told.

The producers actually suggested that the TV series might not stick closely to the Halo source material back in 2019, so it seems they are continuing that plan. Frank O’Conner refers to the Halo show as being part of a “silver timeline” where things could happen differently from what fans may expect. An example given is from the first episode, where the coincidence from Halo: Combat Evolved of “Chief and Cortana simply stumbling across the Halo ring is gone,” so it seems that in the show the Pillar of Autumn may have been deliberately sent to the first Halo after the fall of Reach.

The new trailer for the Halo TV series will launch this Sunday, January 30. For more on the new game Halo Infinite, check out our review right here.
