Overwatch 2 Free-to-Play and Early Access Release Date Confirmed

Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the Overwatch 2 free-to-play release date will be October 4, 2022 as revealed in the Xbox Bethesda showcase during Summer Game Fest. The game will also be launching in early access on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, focusing on “dynamic new PvP content” according to a press release.

Overwatch 2 Junker Queen details revealed too

A new character named Junker Queen will also be available at launch, giving players a chance to try out the Australian-born ruler of Junkertown. As the game’s 34th character, she will be the newest tank hero to join the existing and extensive roster. Junker Queen follows the reveal of Sojourn, described as “a high-mobility and railgun-wielding former Overwatch captain with cybernetic capabilities.”

Additional details on how the live-service model and seasonal content will work for Overwatch 2 will be revealed via livestream on Thursday, June 16, at 10:00 am PDT on the game’s official YouTube and Twitch pages. The Overwatch 2 Reveal Event stream will also provide more information on the upcoming closed beta test.

Mike Ybarra, President of Blizzard Entertainment, believes that the Push game mode, which has two teams battling each other on a symmetric map to push a robot into enemy territory, will revitalize the franchise in a fresh way. He says:

“We can’t wait to roll out the beginning of the Overwatch 2 experience on October 4 and introduce an exciting new competitive vision, featuring amazing new content and a reimagining of the iconic heroes, maps, and gameplay that made the original game so compelling.”

The new maps, also available at launch, will include the snowy New Queen Street in Toronto as well as Midtown Manhattan.

Overwatch 2 will be arriving on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch, and it will support cross-platform play in addition to cross-platform progression.
