Beating the first boss in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Zhang Liang, in the Village of Calamity is pretty tough. In fact, he’s more challenging than the bosses in the following few levels. However, if you study his patterns and follow our guide, you should have no trouble defeating him.
How to beat Zhang Liang in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
In the first boss fight in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Zhang Liang has two phases. They both have a very different move set, which can throw you off the first time you fight him. However, he’s not too hard to beat if you keep a few things in mind for each phase. We recommend a glaive for this fight.
Zhang Liang Phase 1
During the first phase of the Zhang Liang boss fight, you should stay very aggressive throughout the fight. If you stick right next to him, you can lock down his normal attacks with a Spirit Attack combo (Square + Square + Triangle or X + X + Y). Each time you hit him with this, it’ll interrupt his attack.
Since you can lock down his regular attacks, the only thing you have to fear from Zhang Liang is his Critical Blow. When he glows red, get ready to tap the deflect button right as he’s about to hit. If you time this right, you’ll deal a bunch of Spirit Damage and stagger him. Then, just hit Triangle or Y to hit him with a Fatal Strike, which will take off a considerable chunk of his health bar.
You should only have to hit him with about 2-3 Fatal Strikes to defeat his first form. However, if you’re extremely aggressive, you can take him down before he even has a chance to use a Critical Blow.
Zhang Liang Phase 2
Phase 2 of the fight with Zhang Liang is a bit tougher. Now, you want to use the opposite tactic of what you did on his first form. Back off and dodge, parry, or deflect his ranged attacks. Then, when he calms down a bit, you can run in and start comboing him. Your Spirit Attack combo won’t interrupt his attacks as often, but you can still jam up him occasionally.
Again, you’re looking to cause Spirit Damage, so your priority should be to deflect his Critical Blows. Fortunately, you’ve got an ace in the hole for this fight. Once you do enough damage, you’ll unlock your Divine Beast summon. When this happens, just hit Triangle + Circle or Y + B, and the fight will automatically end.
