Nintendo Q2 Financials: Wii U Sales Up, 3DS Sales Down

Nintendo has released its Q2 financial data, indicating a significant bump in Wii U console sales when compared to the same period last year.

The Big N moved 610,000 units during the July to September timeframe, which is nearly double that of what the Wii U sold within the same span last year. Why the spike in sales? Nintendo claims the release of Hyrule Warriors and popularity of Mario Kart 8 are two major reasons.

Meanwhile, 3DS sales weren't quite as encouraging. Sure, with 1.27 million is sales, the handheld sold a whole lot more than Wii U, but compared to last year's impressive 2.49 million figure, sales are comparatively low. You'd think the launch of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS would have boosted that number a bit higher, but perhaps the handheld is reaching a point of saturation?

When looking over the past six months, Nintendo has amassed a net profit of ¥14.3 billion ($131.5 million). Not too shabby. Let's just hope Wii U starts selling like hotcakes. After all, the company has a long way to go before it reaches its 3.6 million year-end sales target!
