Tell GR | What is the best Halo game ever?

It’s a big day for Halo fans, with Microsoft today confirming that Halo Master Chief Collection will be coming to PC while Halo Reach will also be added to the game. Originally released on Xbox One, this will be the first time PC owners get to experience the collection on the platform, reliving Halo 1along with spin-offs ODST and Reach.

Following this news, the GameRevolution editorial team got talking about their favorite Halo games, leaving their thoughts below. As always, we want to hear your opinions, too; what do you think is the best Halo game ever? Let us know and we’ll feature our favorite response in tomorrow’s Tell GR!

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “It’s Halo 2.”

Jason Faulkner, features editor: “I think Halo 3 was the best all-around entry. It retained dual-wielding and added armor power-ups which really keeps your tactical options open. The campaign also was pretty satisfying and marked a decent conclusion for the Human-Covenant War. I wasn’t really fond of the campaigns in Halo 4 and 5, and I think the Forerunners were a lot better as a mysterious progenitor race than actual antagonists. As much as I love Halo, I wish they’d have ended the story with Halo 3 or taken it in a different direction. Crazy Cortana is kinda dumb, and doesn’t really fit with her behavior in the rest of the series.”

Mack Ashworth, lead editor: “For me, it was Halo 3. I spent hours and hours playing Forge maps and enjoying the sheer number of environments and modes created by the community. Normal PvP drew me in, too, with a ranked progression system that I quickly became addicted to. Toss in an awesome co-op campaign and you have your Halo masterpiece.”

Michael Leri, features editor: “I’ve played the first four numbered Halo games and, honestly, none of them really grabbed me. I get it but I didn’t get it. They were decent shooters that didn’t stick with me for some reason. However, the one I enjoyed the most was Halo 4. But, again, I don’t remember why I enjoyed it the most. Maybe I liked the improved look and new enemy? I’m not sure but I apologize for all the harm I’ve done to your childhoods.”

Bradley Russell, news editor: “It’s gotta be ODST. A beautiful little gem of a game, it combines the wistful melancholy of something like Cowboy Bebop with the toe-tapping jazz score of, well, Cowbow Bebop. Many probably polished it off inside a handful of hours and haven’t thought about it since but, I beg you, go back and play it and you’ll find the most perfectly-paced, brilliant Halo game, and one of the best shooters of a generation. It’s a fine companion piece to Halo 3, too, and reminiscent of a time where big developers could take the shackles off, creatively speaking, and do something a little different with a major property.”
