Best anime games coming in 2019 and 2020

Best anime games coming in 2019 and 2020

In between new episodes of hotly anticipated shows like Psycho Pass and My Hero Academia, otaku will have a ton of anime-stylized games to play soon. Dragon Ball Z, One Punch Man, and Tokyo Ghoul fans can look forward to new software featuring each franchise’s iconic characters, while people looking for a change of pace may be interested in titles that well-respected developers like Vanillaware will have to offer. The following are the best anime games set to launch in 2019 and 2020.

Best Anime Games Coming Soon | Code Vein

code vein pre-order, best anime games

If anime and Dark Souls had a baby, it would definitely look a lot like Bandai Namco’s Code Vein. When the game releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 27, it’ll have players defeat one ghoul after another as they journey through dungeons with their cute A.I. companions. The ability to equip a variety of buffs and switch freely between builds in combat should make fans of FromSoftware’s Souls franchise quite happy, granted it all comes together.

Best Anime Games Coming Soon | 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

best anime games

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim will evoke classic mecha anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion when it releases for PlayStation 4 on November 28. Set in an alternate version of 1980s Japan, it’ll follow 13 high school students who are dragged into fighting a war with gigantic automatons. Seeing as how Aegis Rim is a Vanillaware title, curious fans should expect the title to place a lot of focus on its cast of characters and their relationships with one another. Though the game will only launch in Japan soon, it’ll release worldwide sometime in 2020.

Best Anime Games Coming Soon | Persona 5 Scramble

best anime games

Though Switch fans may be a bit disappointed that Persona 5 S isn’t a port of Persona 5, they should still be excited for Persona 5 Scramble. In development by the same studio behind the Dynasty Warriors franchise, the game will have players clash against scores of demons in the streets of Tokyo. While little is known about the spin-off right now, more news will arrive next month. A release date is likely, as Atlus has only given us a 2020 window so far. Persona 5 Scramble is currently planned for both PlayStation 4 and Switch.

Best Anime Games Coming Soon | One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows

best anime games

One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows will preserve the franchise’s comedy by implementing the ridiculously overpowered Saitama as a timer. Players will have 120 minutes to fight one another as beloved characters like Genos, Speed-o’-Sound Sonic, and Tatsumaki before the bald-headed mascot arrives and knocks everyone out with one punch. Suffice it to say that when One Punch Man‘s debut video game arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2020, it’ll make a lot of fans of the franchise happy.

Best Anime Games Coming Soon | Project Sakura Wars

best anime games

Sega’s long-dormant Sakura Wars franchise will finally return when Project Sakura Wars launches for PlayStation 4 systems in Japan on December 12. The game is set to preserve the role-playing and dating simulator elements that gave the original titles their identity nearly 15 years ago. The popular “Live and Interactive Picture System” will return, granting players options on how to build relationships with other characters. Of course, fans will also be able to hop into mechs for fast-paced hack-and-slash battles. Who wouldn’t want to slice up monsters as a bright pink robot? Project Sakura Wars won’t arrive in the West until 2020, but hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Best Anime Games Coming Soon | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

best anime games

When Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 17, it’ll toss fans headfirst into some of the franchise’s most iconic battles. Players will get to relive Goku’s first fight with Frieza, the Z Fighters’ brawl with Perfect Cell, and Gohan’s skirmish with Majin Buu, among other exciting moments throughout the Dragon Ball Z series. There’s even a chance that Beerus will show up in the game, as he did appear in both of the show’s climatic movies. Whatever the case may be, Kakarot is shaping up to be a fitting sendoff to the franchise’s presence on current generation consoles.

Best Anime Games Coming Soon | Tokyo Ghoul: re Call to Exist

best anime games

Tokyo Ghoul: re Call to Exist will unite characters from each season of the hit anime so that they may fight against hordes of enemies as Kagune-wielding ghouls or Quinque-wielding investigators. Kaneki, Touka, Shuu, and more are set to appear, and players will have the option of taking on human-controlled opponents via the title’s team-based competitive multiplayer modes. Fans won’t have to wait long to find out if Call to Exist lives up to its potential, as the game releases for PlayStation 4 and PC on November 15.

Best Anime Games Coming Soon | Genshin Impact

best anime games

Genshin Impact stirred up a lot of controversy this summer, as many ChinaJoy attendees claimed the game was a blatant ripoff of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Some fans even went so far as to destroy their PlayStation 4 consoles in protest. We’ll have to wait a little while longer to discover whether or not the title will be more than just a clone of Nintendo’s modern classic, as it will release for PlayStation 4 and PC sometime in 2020. Critics should try their best to not destroy any more hardware in the meantime.

Now is a great time to be an anime fan, as there are so many promising new games and shows launching in the coming months. These new releases cater to a wide variety of tastes, meaning there’s something out there for every otaku. Let’s hope that 2021 will carry the momentum, as there’s no such thing as too much anime.
