Little Nightmares 2 Ending Explained

Here’s what Little Nightmares 2’s twist ending means

Like the first game, Little Nightmares 2 ends in a way that most players won’t be expecting. It’s this twist that will be spoken about in the weeks, months, and possibly years to come, with fans coming up with different theories. The ending also introduces a mechanic that may have huge repercussions for future DLCs, sequels, or spin-offs. For those who have completed the game, or don’t mind reading spoilers, this is the Little Nightmares 2 ending explained.

Little Nightmares 2 Ending Explained

Why did Six let Mono fall at the end?

Six lets Mono fall because she sees that he is linked to the Thin Man.

At the end Little Nightmares 2, Mono saves Six and turns her back into her normal form. The pair run to escape the enormous blob of eyeballs and attempt to make a big jump. Six lands successfully, turns around, and manages to catch Mono before he falls down. This mirrors several times from before where Six has saved Mono from falling. However, this time Six drops Mono, causing him to fall down and be captured by the blob.

It definitely looks like Six intentionally drops Mono, but why did she let him fall? Well, now that he is no longer wearing a mask or hat, Six is able to see Mono’s face clearly. She looks at him directly before dropping him, likely spotting the resemblance to the Thin Man. She now sees him as a threat and uses the opportunity to take him out.

It is Six’s betrayal that ironically leads Mono to become the Thin Man. If she didn’t drop him, then his fate may have been different.

Who is the Thin Man?

Little Nightmares 2 Ending Explained

The Thin Man is Mono.

After being betrayed by Six, Mono falls down and is surrounded by the fleshy eyeball blob. It cacoons him and over time he transforms into the hat-wearing Thin Man.

Hats aren’t the only thing that Mono has in common with the Thin Man. Both have power over TV signals and their ability to manipulate. While Mono initially uses this power to fight evil, he later becomes driven to the darker side as the Thin Man.

Is there time travel in Little Nightmares 2?

It’s possible that there is time travel in Little Nightmares 2.

Mono becoming the Thin Man opens up the idea of time travel within Little Nightmares 2. Unless there are multiple Thin Men who take over the role, or there is some other kind of magic affecting things, time travel must be possible in this universe.

Mono and the Thin Man can both travel across space, but until the end there’s no evidence that they can move across time. With that said, the Thin Man’s ghostly appearance and glitchy movements could suggest that he’s moving through timelines, haunting the heroes as they act out the movements that eventually doom Mono. Perhaps there will be a more definitive answer in future games, DLCs, or spin-offs!

Is Little Nightmares 2 a prequel?

Little Nightmares 2 Ending Explained

Little Nightmares 2 could be interpreted as a prequel.

Another theory is that Little Nightmares 2 is actually a prequel that takes place before the events of the original game. Six isn’t wearing her trademark yellow raincoat at the beginning of LN2, as she ultimately finds it on the ground during the second game. When she picks it up, ominous music plays with the “reveal” that she is seemingly the same character.

We see moments of violence from Six that appear unsettling to Mono. The moment where she kills a hollow child in the school with her bare hands is especially harrowing, though the time when she heats her hands up after defeating The Doctor with the furnace is also disconcerting. This could be Six growing to become the character she is in Little Nightmares, which ultimately ends with her superpowered and leeching the life out of many enemies (and a friend).

The secret ending also hints at Little Nightmares 2 being a prequel.

Why can’t Six use her powers?

It’s not clear why Six can’t use her powers in Little Nightmares 2.

At the end of the first game, Six’s powers have grown to the point where she can instantly kill enemies by simply walking past them. In Little Nightmares 2, this power appears to have been lost. This could be for multiple reasons.

Firstly, Six’s powers could have a time limit. Perhaps in the period since she left The Maw her powers have faded away. Or maybe the distance from The Maw and The Lady have caused her to lose them.

Secondly, it could be the Thin Man suppressing her powers. This powerful enemy clearly outmatches Six in the encounter where he captures her. This could be another reason why Six is okay with letting Mono fall and stopping the suppression of her powers.

Finally, if Little Nightmares 2 is in fact a prequel, Six wouldn’t have gained her powers yet.

Like the first game, there are many different ways of interpreting the story of Little Nightmares 2. While the writers provide hints and a general direction, it’s up to the player to work out what the story means to them. With that said, it would be nice to get more “official” details through future DLCs, sequels, and/or spin-offs.
